Moses Williams was born ca. 1776 and was known for his ability to create detailed silhouettes (or “profiles”) of people’s faces. Williams was born enslaved to the artist and museum director, Charles Willson Peale, and grew up working in Peale’s Philadelphia museum. Williams’ story will now be told at the Peale Museum in Baltimore, founded by Rembrandt Peale.

SPARK 6: Refractions artist Phil Davis curates Projections at The Peale, an illumination of The Peale’s second-floor galleries with video projections viewed from outside. The video program, which features numerous artists’ works, will include a short video and animation works on a loop.

In connection with SPARK 6: Refractions exhibition, join artist Stephen Bradley and collaborators for a two-hour art and science workshop exploring BioBuggy tools in order to observe collect and identify various critters and organisms that live inside The Peale outside in the garden and around the building.

It will be the biggest party downtown since we’ve invited our Holliday Street neighbors at Zion Church and The Real News Network to help celebrate! The event is free and open to the public from 10:00am to 4:00pm on August 13, 2023, and takes place at 225 Holliday Street. Guests will receive a complementary slice of Peale birthday cake at 1:00pm.

You Be Safe Now is a retrospective exhibition of art made in Baltimore. For the past five years, Julia Glatfelter has captured moments in paint and cut paper collage—rendering the colors and observances of our city. The result is a large collection of everyday images: magnolia blossoms, “no shoot zone” signs, narrow alley streets, and foxtrot patrols. What we notice sets the tone for our experience here.

Praised for her captivating stage presence and technically masterful performances, Hanzhi Wang wowed local audiences in her 2019 Candlelight debut and is the first accordionist in history to win First Prize at the YCA Competition. Likewise, saxophonist Steven Banks is YCA’s first ever First Prize winner on his instrument.

The Banjo Gathering is the only forum focused entirely on the banjo as a historical, cultural, and design object. The 3-day 2022 gathering was in Baltimore in order to recognize the city’s role in banjo manufacturing, the early presence of banjos in the Chesapeake region, and how the enduring consequences of enslavement shapes our understanding of banjo history.

The Peale celebrates Día de los Muertos with friends from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and the National Museum of the American Latino (NMAL). Special events from 6-9pm will mark the closing of the Hostile Terrain 94 (HT94) exhibition, brought to the Peale by JHU, and an ofrenda and procession to honor and support the healing of the community of Uvalde, Texas, offered by NMAL.

Wanted: Your Memories of Winter

September 2022

Lynn Cazabon records your winter memories to be added into the project Losing Winter, a site-specific, participatory artwork and archive of memories and emotions about winter, revealing personal and cultural ties to the season and providing a window onto what we are collectively losing due to climate change impacts on weather patterns.

Lumenbox & Solargraphy Camera Workshop

September 11, 2022

Artist Chris Peregoy will share his love of the magic of photography in a hands-on Lumenbox & Solargraphy workshop. Participants will build two cameras: a Lumenbox camera and a Solargraphy camera, like the ones Chris used to create his artworks in the SPARK: New Light exhibition, and load them with light-sensitive material.
